When you arrive for your appointment in the Dentist’s Office, a technician will escort you to a treatment room, help you into a chair, and drape a bib around your neck to protect your clothes from stains. The procedure for root canal treatment in Dubai is as follows:

Step 1: Anesthesia

The dentist will apply a small amount of numbing medication to the gum line near the affected tooth. Once the effect has set in, a local anesthetic is injected into the gums. You may feel a sharp pinching or burning sensation, but this passes quickly.

You will be awake during the procedure, but the anesthesia will keep you from feeling pain.

Step 2: Remove the pulp

If your tooth is numb, the endodontist or general dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth. Once the infected or damaged pulp is exposed, the specialist carefully removes it with special tools called files. They will take extra care to clean all the webs (canals) of your tooth.

Step 3: Antibiotics

Once the pulp is removed, the dentist may cover the area with a topical antibiotic to ensure the infection goes away and prevent reinfection. Once the root canals are clean and disinfected, the dentist fills and seals the tooth with a sealing paste and gum-like material. They can also prescribe oral antibiotics.

Step 4: Temporary Filling

The dentist completes the procedure by filling the small opening at the top of the tooth with a soft temporary material. This seal prevents the ducts from being damaged by saliva.

After your root canal treatment:

Your teeth and gums may be sore when the anesthesia wears off. Your gums can also swell. Most dentists will tell you to treat these symptoms with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Call your dentist if the pain becomes extreme or lasts more than a few days.

You should be able to continue your daily routine tasks one day after the treatment. Avoid chewing the damaged tooth until it has a permanent filling or a crown is placed on it.

Within a few days of your root canal treatment, you will see your regular dentist. They will take x-rays to make sure there is no infection. They will also replace the temporary filling with a permanent filling.

If you prefer, the dentist can place a permanent crown over the tooth. Crowns are artificial teeth that can be made of porcelain or gold but look more realistic.

It may take several weeks for you to get used to the feeling of your teeth after the procedure. This is normal and nothing to worry about.
